6 Tips on How to Avoid Loose Braces Wire

Even though you take good care of your braces in Mount Kisco, accidents can still happen. If you eat crunchy foods, get hit in the face, or even just bite your fingernails, your wires can get loose. This can also happen through no fault of your own. There can be instances when the glue between the teeth and braces just isn’t as strong as it needs to be. So, if the braces wire loose, then here’s what you need to know!

Why Do Braces Become Loose?

Having braces is one of the best things you can do because this orthodontic treatment can completely change your smile and let you attain the smile you’ve been wanting. However, they can cause problems at times, particularly when they become loose.

But what are the causes of braces wire loose?

Braces can get loose because of several factors, which may include:

  1. Brackets that have not adhered properly
  2. An injury to the mouth that results in the wire being loose
  3. Not brushing your teeth properly
  4. Eating restricted foods

Risks of a Braces Wire Loose

Having your braces, especially the wire, become loose can delay your treatment by months. The teeth will have to catch up with the other teeth around them.

Immediately setting up an emergency appointment with your orthodontist once the braces wire loose will make sure that you stay on track with your orthodontic treatment.

Here are some helpful tips you should do to avoid them!

Don’t chew gum and ice

While wearing braces, it would be best to refrain from eating as much sticky food as possible. Anything that sticks to your teeth means it can also stick to your braces, which means it can pull on your brackets and wires, and also the bands around your molars. You put more strain and stress on your wires, bands, and brackets the more you chew on the gum. This can cause them to move out of alignment, break, or just start to hurt. Gum must be avoided, but also any other foods that are sticky and chewy should be taken off your current diet too.

Furthermore, ice is hard and cold, and it’s not good to chew on it, even if you aren’t wearing braces. However, it’s much more damaging when you do have your braces on. As you chew on a piece of ice, it can easily bend your wire, delaying the process of your orthodontic treatment as well as making the braces uncomfortable to wear. Visit your orthodontist in Mt Kisco immediately if this happens.

Don’t bite your fingernails or other hard objects

Biting your fingernails can delay or postpone your orthodontic treatment. Doing so may result in you having to wear your braces for a much longer period of time than you initially expected. This is due to the pressure that nail biting can apply to the roots of your teeth.

Additionally, biting pencils, pens, bottle tops, and other hard objects can loosen wires in braces, which causes them not to work effectively. Pencils are also dangerous because of the metal, wood, and paint components that not only ruin your braces but bring inflammation in the mouth if consumed.

Don’t use your teeth to open things

While this is true when you aren’t wearing braces, it’s important to keep this in mind while you’re wearing braces. Don’t use your teeth to open bottles, tear open bags, straighten or bend wire, and the like. Teeth are teeth, and they should be used for eating. Using your teeth for other tasks can damage them, causing them to chip, fracture, or break. And it can be especially hard on your braces, as the brackets and wires are severely affected. Use the necessary tools to open things and not your teeth.

Drink carbonated or sugary drinks

You may think that drinking sugary drinks while wearing braces is harmless; think again. It’s common knowledge that sugary drinks can lead to cavities and tooth decay, but are you aware that they can also damage the components of your braces?

Damaged or weakened braces can cause brackets and wires to become loose, delaying the treatment. To avoid this, skip out on soft drinks and other sweet beverages. If you can’t completely cut them out of your diet, then be sure to rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth immediately after drinking them.

Brush properly and correctly

It is tempting to brush your teeth as often as possible, especially while wearing braces. But there’s a thing called brushing too much. Just because you’re brushing a lot doesn’t mean that you’re actually doing a good job with your oral hygiene routine.

And brushing too vigorously can wear down the enamel of your teeth and damage your gums, causing gum erosion that results in sensitivity. It can also damage your braces, causing wires to become loose.

A Quick Fix to Loose Braces Wire

If the braces wire loose and the orthodontist is not available or the clinic is closed, here’s a temporary solution to fix the situation. Keep in mind that you still need to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist even after doing this.

If the wire has come out of the tube on the back tooth, first try to reinsert the wire yourself with a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers. Keep in mind that if the wire poking you or any part of your braces is causing irritation, placing a piece of wax over the area helps. If you cannot reinsert the wire or it is still bothersome, do not force it, but just wait until your appointment.
