Do Metal Braces Work Faster?

When asked, “Do metal braces work faster?” many orthodontists used to respond somewhat automatically that they do. When compared with early Invisalign tray aligners, metal braces held the edge in the speed department. Due to advancements with Invisalign, the development of ceramic braces, and new orthodontic techniques, metal braces now have some competition.

Do Metal Braces Work Faster?

The consensus once had metal braces in the lead. Because metal braces can be adjusted more aggressively, they were more effective at straightening teeth quickly. When you stop to consider that Invisalign has only been in use since 2000, great strides in improving the efficacy of the treatment method have been made. After 20 years of research and development, Invisalign is just as effective at correcting many overbite problems as traditional metal braces.

In a virtual dead heat for speed, outlying factors and severity of alignment problems come into play when determining which method will be faster. During an examination, your orthodontist will look at your teeth alignment and jaw positioning. They will recommend the straightening system they feel will do the job fastest and most effectively. That may be Invisalign, or it may be traditional metal braces.

Exploring All the Options

When you see an orthodontist, they will perform a complete examination. Using x-rays, digital imaging, and 3D technology, they can make a map of your entire mouth. This includes being able to predict growth patterns for teeth still developing in younger patients. This allows the doctor to make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan to stop existing alignment problems. In addition, the doctor can formulate a plan to prevent future problems from developing. Among the many options available to orthodontists are various types of braces.

Traditional metal braces are common. They utilize a system of clips, wires, and small bands to realign teeth along the jaw. You can now get colored bands to add a little zip to your smile. There are also clear, ceramic brackets available that make traditional-style braces “almost” invisible, although the bands and wires are still visible.

Of course, Invisalign is also an option now. Invisalign is being used to treat more advanced and pronounced dental alignment issues. Patients often prefer these invisible alignment trays for many reasons.

When you see an orthodontist for the first time, expect to hear options. Different timelines may be introduced for other treatment types. Although in some instances, metal braces may work faster, that is not always the case anymore.
